The ACE format was a popular archive format in the late 1990s and early 2000s, especially in the download scene. Today, the format is practically extinct and is no longer natively supported by any modern operating system. Converting to ZIP is the easiest way to make the contents of old ACE archives accessible again.

WinAce: History

ACE was released in 1998 by German developer Marcel Lemke. The accompanying programme, WinAce, positioned itself as a powerful alternative to WinZip and WinRAR, with a compression rate that was impressive for the time and surpassed ZIP and RAR in many benchmarks.

In its heyday around the turn of the millennium, ACE was widely used in the download scene. Its strong compression and the ability to split archives into multiple parts made the format ideal for file exchange over slow Internet connections and upload limits.

Unlike ZIP (open standard) and RAR (proprietary), WinAce was no longer developed from the MID-2000s onwards. The official website went offline and updates were no longer provided. The final blow came in 2019 when a critical security vulnerability was discovered in the widely used unacev2.dll library. As a result, 7-Zip, WinRAR and other archiving programmes completely removed ACE support.

Why can't I open ACE files with 7-Zip or WinRAR anymore?

Since 2019, most archiving programmes have removed ACE support because a critical security vulnerability was discovered in the only available ACE library (unacev2.dll). Converting to ZIP via an online service is therefore often the safest option.

Will files or folder structures be lost during conversion?

No. All files and the directory structure of the ACE archive are transferred in full to the ZIP archive.
